**An Enlightening Experience with Derek Crouse: Insights into Techniques of the Past and Beyond**

This past week, I had the privilege of attending a "Workshop" led by Derek Crouse from Crouse Canine at my son’s facility, DSWK- TNK9, here in Tennessee. It was a fortuitous event, as I had evacuated from Florida due to the storm, and being here allowed me to take full advantage of this incredible learning opportunity. Derek Crouse, a highly knowledgeable and charismatic figure, brought a wealth of information to the table, delivered in such a clear and engaging manner that it resonated deeply with everyone present.

For those unfamiliar, Derek Crouse, has a great knowledge working with different training systems, including the @NePoPo training system—a system I had always been curious about. It was intriguing to discover that so many of the techniques I learned back in the 1970s as a breeder and trainer were quite similar to what this system teaches, albeit under different names. The evolution of dog training terminology over the years can be overwhelming, but Derek broke it all down in a way that made perfect sense.

Dopamine Box

Throughout the seminar, we delved into various aspects of desensitizing dogs and the use of modern training tools like the clicker and the clack- clack. One concept that stood out to me was the “dopamine box,” something I wasn’t familiar with by name but realized I’ve been implementing in my training for decades. It was fascinating to see these techniques repackaged with new terminology but still rooted in the same foundational principles I’ve practiced for years.

Derek’s explanation of the differences between ball droppers versus poppers, the use of salt shakers for scent work, and the idea of shaping behaviors through "the aquarium" method was enlightening. These were terms I had never encountered, yet the methods themselves were very much in line with the training I’ve done. The focus on artificial motivation, the terms about audio, visual, spatial, and tactile cues, and the distinction between direct and indirect motivators, brought a fresh perspective on training that even pet owners can easily apply.

What truly set Derek apart was not just his knowledge but his passion. His energy was contagious, and he had a remarkable ability to hold the group’s attention. He made us all feel like family, creating an atmosphere where everyone felt comfortable engaging, asking questions, and truly absorbing the material. The sense of camaraderie in the group made the seminar even more special.

I strongly recommend that anyone involved in dog training—whether professional or a dedicated pet owner—attend one of Derek Crouse workshops. His commitment to the craft, his deep understanding of so many Training Systems and Techniques, and his ability to transmit knowledge with clarity and enthusiasm make his courses incredibly valuable. It was a remarkable experience, and I left with a renewed sense of purpose in my own training endeavors.

If you have the chance to learn from Derek Crouse, take it. I promise you won’t regret it.
